AI Coding Assistants Compared: Cursor, Copilot, Claude Code

If you employ a developer, or you are the developer, the question is no longer whether to use an AI coding assistant. It is which one, and how much to let it do. The tools have diverged enough that the choice now genuinely matters. Below is a plain comparison of the three most common options, written for someone deciding what to pay for rather than someone benchmarking models.

They are not the same kind of product

This is the distinction most comparisons skip. GitHub Copilot is an assistant that lives inside your editor and completes code as you type. Cursor is an entire editor built around AI, where the model can read and rewrite across many files. Claude Code is a terminal-based agent that works on a task, runs commands, and reports back. Completion, editing, and delegation are three different jobs, and the friction you feel with any one tool usually comes from asking it to do a job it was not shaped for.

GitHub Copilot

Copilot is the conservative choice, and there is nothing wrong with that. It sits quietly in Visual Studio Code, JetBrains editors and others, suggesting the rest of the line or the rest of the function. It is fast, it rarely gets in the way, and because it is a Microsoft product the procurement conversation at a larger company is usually short.

Its weakness is scope. Copilot is excellent at the next twenty lines and much weaker at "restructure how this module handles authentication." If your developer spends most of their day writing routine code in a familiar codebase, Copilot is likely enough. If they spend it navigating unfamiliar systems, it will feel thin.

Cursor

Cursor asks you to switch editors, which is a real cost. In exchange you get an environment where the model has proper awareness of your project. You can select a chunk of code, describe what it should become, and watch it change. You can ask a question about the codebase and get an answer grounded in the actual files rather than a plausible guess.

The people who love Cursor tend to be working in codebases they did not write. The people who dislike it are usually attached to a highly customised editor setup they do not want to rebuild. Both positions are reasonable. Cursor supports several underlying models, so you are not locked to one vendor's quality curve.

Claude Code

Claude Code is the most different of the three. It runs in a terminal, takes a task in plain English, then reads files, edits them, runs tests, and iterates until it thinks the job is done. When it works well, it is closer to handing work to a junior colleague than to using a tool.

That framing also explains the failure mode. A junior colleague left unsupervised for two hours can produce a great deal of confident, wrong work. Agentic tools need clear task boundaries, version control you trust, and a human reviewing every change. Used with those guardrails, it handles the tedious multi-file work that nobody enjoys. Used without them, it creates cleanup.

How to choose without a three-month trial

All three have free or trial tiers and paid tiers that change frequently, so check current pricing directly rather than trusting any comparison article, including this one. The cost difference between them is small next to the cost of a developer's time, which is the real number in this decision.

What none of them fix

AI assistants make writing code faster. They do not make deciding what to build faster, and for most small businesses that is the actual bottleneck. We have watched companies produce software at twice the previous rate and get no more value from it, because the problem was never typing speed.

They also do not remove the need for review. Generated code compiles and looks correct far more often than it is correct. Subtle errors in edge cases, security handling and data validation survive a casual read. If you do not have someone competent reviewing what lands in your repository, a coding assistant will increase your risk rather than reduce it. Can a non-programmer use these tools to build software?

You can get surprisingly far, and then hit a wall. Generating a working prototype is now genuinely accessible. Deploying it securely, handling customer data properly, and fixing it when it breaks at an awkward moment are not. If the software touches payments or personal information, involve someone who knows what they are doing before it goes live.

Do these tools train on my private code?

Policies differ by vendor and by plan tier, and they change. Business and enterprise tiers generally exclude your code from training by default, while free tiers often do not. Read the current terms for the specific plan you are buying rather than relying on what someone told you last year, and check with your client if you work under confidentiality agreements.

Is it worth paying for more than one?

Often yes, because they overlap less than the marketing implies. A common pairing is an in-editor completion tool for everyday typing and an agentic tool for larger chunks of work. Given that a single developer hour costs more than a month of most of these subscriptions, the maths usually favours trying both.

Will this replace hiring a developer?

No, and be sceptical of anyone selling that. These tools make an experienced developer meaningfully more productive. They make an inexperienced one produce more code without the judgement to know whether it is sound. The scarce resource was never typing; it was knowing what to type and being able to tell when the answer is wrong.
