AI Video Tools Compared: Sora, Runway, Kling, and Veo

By Scott McKenna, Founder · 2026-04-18 · AI Thought Leadership · Updated May 13, 2026

Text-to-video has moved from a curiosity to something you could plausibly use in a social post. Sora, Runway, Kling and Veo are the names that come up most often. They differ more than the demo reels suggest, and for a local business the deciding factors turn out to be practical ones: clip length, how much control you have, and what the licence permits.

What all of them are still bad at

Worth establishing first, because it shapes everything else. Generated video struggles with continuity. Ask for the same person in two shots and you will get two people who resemble each other. Hands, text on signs, and reflections remain unreliable. Anything requiring a specific real place, your actual premises, your actual staff, is out of reach entirely.

This means generated video is atmosphere, not documentation. It works for abstract visuals, mood pieces and background texture. It does not work for showing customers what you do, which for most local businesses is the thing they most want to show.

Sora

OpenAI's model produces the most cinematic output of the group and handles complex prompts with multiple elements better than most. Physics and lighting are convincing more often than not.

Access and usage terms have shifted repeatedly since launch, so confirm current availability and commercial permissions before planning anything around it. The output quality is high; the operational predictability is the weak point for a business that needs to deliver something on a schedule.

Runway

The most useful of the four for actual work, largely because it is not only a generator. Runway is a video editing environment with generation built in, alongside tools for removing backgrounds, extending shots, altering existing footage and controlling camera movement.

That last point matters. Being able to direct a camera move rather than describing one in a prompt and hoping is the difference between a tool and a slot machine. Runway's raw generation is not always the best of the group, but its controllability and its ability to work on footage you already have make it the practical choice for most marketing use.

Kling

Strong on human motion, which is where several competitors struggle, and it handles longer clips better than most. It has been notably accessible, which has made it popular for experimentation.

The considerations are non-technical. It is developed in China, and businesses with data governance requirements or clients who ask where content is processed should establish the answer before adopting it. Interface and documentation are less polished for English-speaking users. As a source of raw clips it is capable and worth testing.

Veo

Google's model, and its advantage is integration. If your business already runs on Google Workspace and YouTube, Veo appearing inside tools you use daily removes friction that matters more than a marginal quality difference. Audio generation alongside video is a genuine differentiator.

It is the most conservative of the four in content restrictions, which will either be reassuring or frustrating depending on your work. For ordinary business marketing it is rarely an obstacle.

Choosing, briefly

Pricing across all four is credit-based, changes frequently, and is not comparable on a simple per-minute basis. Check current rates directly and budget for waste, because you will generate several unusable clips for every one you keep.

The uncomfortable question for a local business

Before investing time here, consider whether generated video is what your customers want. A phone video of your team finishing a job, shot badly, often outperforms polished abstract footage, because it is evidence rather than decoration. Local businesses win on trust, and trust comes from specificity.

Also check that the video has somewhere to send people. In our audit of 622 local business websites, 51.0% had no click-to-call link. A well-made video that drives a motivated viewer to a page where they cannot easily phone you has wasted the effort. Our free website audit covers that side of the chain.

If you do use it

Keep clips short and use them as inserts rather than as the whole video. Combine generated footage with real footage so the piece is grounded in something actual. Avoid generating people where you can, since that is where the uncanny quality is most noticeable and where disclosure expectations are tightening. Keep a record of what was generated and how, because platform disclosure rules for synthetic media are changing and being able to answer quickly is worth the small effort.

Can I use AI-generated video in paid advertising?

Generally yes on commercial plans, but check both the generator's terms and the advertising platform's policy on synthetic media, which are evolving separately. Some platforms now require disclosure labels for AI-generated content in ads. Confirm both before committing budget, since a rejected ad mid-campaign is an expensive way to learn the rules.

Is it good enough to replace hiring a videographer?

Not for anything showing your actual business. A videographer can film your premises, your team and your work, which is what local customers respond to. Generated video is a supplement for abstract or illustrative sequences. If your goal is proving you are real and competent, footage of real things wins.

How long does it take to get a usable clip?

Longer than the demos suggest. Generation itself takes minutes, but getting output matching what you had in mind usually takes several attempts and prompt revisions. Budget an hour or two for a handful of seconds you are happy with, particularly early on while you learn how each tool responds to description.

Do I need to disclose that a video is AI-generated?

Increasingly yes, and the requirements are tightening. Several major platforms require labelling of synthetic media, particularly where it depicts realistic people or events. Requirements differ by platform and jurisdiction, so check current rules where you publish, and label voluntarily when it is unclear. Being upfront costs nothing and avoids a credibility problem later.
